Being a college student comes with a lot of unrealized perks: access to technology programs, professional mentoring, discounted-price opportunities and studying abroad. Many times film students don’t have the means to travel across the world to create their ideas, have the equipment they need, or have constructive criticism. However, beginning this summer on July 6, 2014, The Jerusalem Film Workshop is about to give film students from all over the world just that.

Based in Israel, this is the first high-level film education program offered of its kind in this beautiful scenery, looking to help aspiring filmmakers fill their passion by receiving instruction from Israel’s leading film figures. After being initiated by Gal Greenspan, Roi Kurland and Kate Rosenberg of GREENproductions, it was obvious how brilliant of an opportunity this would be for students around the world. GREENproductions is based out of Israel as well, and as a dynamic film group full of energy and youth they saw this as an opportunity to expand knowledge on eager college students.

In a press release, Greenspan said:

“Israel in general and Jerusalem in particular offer the types of settings that are truly ideal for storytelling and filmmaking. Our concept is to introduce students to the country while providing them with the tools and education to express themselves through the medium of film.”

Of course, going abroad is expensive and not all college students can afford to do that as well as pay for the program itself, so with the help of Onward Israel and United King Films, discounted rates are being offered to help make the course more affordable.

This workshop will be divided into four individual courses: a one month course devoted to instruction for both documentary and fiction filmmaking techniques, two “mini-courses” of two weeks each where students will have the opportunity to choose between fiction and documentary courses and then the main six-week track. With all of this students will receive top instruction and travel opportunities to go around the country.

So who will you be working with? Instructors for the course are Oscar nominated movie-makers and several figures who have been vital to Israeli filmmaking. They will work with you through everything, but also give your creative mind room to breathe.

Worried about equipment? Worry no more. This workshop will give its participants access to state of the art cameras and filmmaking equipment necessary to making the best quality film. Worried about not being chosen because you’re just a beginner? Throw those worries aside. Greenspan commented that the workshop is “intended for all levels of aspiring filmmakers.” He also said, “The goal of this program is not only to give students the tools to become better artists, but to learn how to use a unique setting like Jerusalem to tell dramatic stories.”

Students will participate in the Jerusalem International Film Festival, a renowned event that is the highlight of the city’s culture events, upon completion of the workshop. This is an incredible opportunity for young filmmakers who are looking to not only learn but to expose and immerse themselves into a beautiful and rich culture.

The workshop is being coordinated in cooperation with The Jerusalem Film and Television Fund, the Maaleh School of Television, Film and Arts in Jerusalem and the Jerusalem Cinematheque.
